Do's & Don'ts (first year)
Do's
After your installation...You will need to shampoo with the Sisterlocks™ Getting Started Shampoo... This shampoo is especially formulated to assist in the locking process...
Never skip this step or you CAN prolong your locking process.
Sisterlocks™ Getting Started Shampoo, is also great for those problem locs...that don't seem to want to lock..There is never a set time that you will stop using the Sisterlocks™ Getting Started Shampoo.
Everyone's hair texture is different, so will the locking process. Continue to use the Sisterlocks™ Getting Started Shampoo until locs are COMPLETELY locked...
Dont's
(after your hair is completely locked) Please do not shampoo with anything you get your hands on...so please don't use cheap shampoo.
If you are not using the Sisterlocks™ line of products, please do your research and purchase a professional line of hair care products, that will keep your locs well moisturized.
Do's
Have your stylist/loctician recommend styling options. This is very important in the beginning stages. Excessive manipulation (of your locs) WILL prolong the locking process. Sisterlocks™ will need to settle in the beginning stages, for them to take on their locking form. Certain styling practices should wait until locks are in the latter part of the settling stage.
Dont's
In the beginning stages, you should not overly TOUCH or RAKE through locs with your fingers.. We call this " Hands in the Locs" syndrome..LOL. Sisterlocks™ start the locking process from the tip/end of the lock...up to the root/scalp....Any excessive touching/raking through the locs with your fingers, CAN prolong the locking process. Instead..just place your locs in the position you choose to style it in.
Do's
Sisterlocks™....short or medium length, can be a challenge in the beginning stage to style, through the first 12 weeks..than maybe soft braid-outs and roller sets. It all depends on your style.
Dont's
Permanent color should NEVER be applied during the settling in phase. This WILL prolong the locking process. It is worth the wait to keep locs healthy and looking good.
Loc tips
1. Please be aware of Lint. It is almost impossible to take out of Sisterlocks™. So the only way to prevent locs from getting lint... is to ALWAYS cover them, when wearing sweaters or laying on cotton sheets, etc.
2. Sweat turns into salt when dry. Salt is abrasive. Locks will break off from the abrasive salt if left unwashed. If you are an athlete or work out a lot or naturally sweaty (private summer), please wash your locks at least once a week.
3. Holes in locs will cause breakage as well. I recommend getting your locks repaired if you have a lot of holes in your locs.
3. Braid outs, twist outs, roller sets, spiral sets, cornrows are all fine, when wanting to style locs...as long as they are not pulled too tight...Tension on Sisterlocks™ are one of the leading causes for our locs to thin and break....NEVER sleep with hard rollers..This is very important for the health of your locs....
4. Greasy products WILL clog hair follicles, get trap inside locs and attract dirt to your locs. If you are looking for healthy locs, that will grow down your back... Keep your locs clean (shampoo at least once every two weeks)... and hydrate your locs between shampoos.
5. DO I HAVE TO DO THE BIG CHOP TO START MY SISTERLOCK JOURNEY?
No, you don’t. If you are uncomfortable with a shorter hair style, then you can slowly transition and when you are ready, you can cut the remainder of chemical processed ends off with a licensed cosmetologist.
